Brent Rollins

Visual artist Brent Rollins designed the album art for Freeway and Jake One's Stimulus Package which dropped this past Tuesday, and it bangs. The case is modelled after a money clip from the outside, but upon opening the package, we see a wallet with custom-made one dollar bills and credit cards.

" I mean, thugs getting hyped off package design is like some kind of cool-ass dream from an alternate universe."

Rollins isn't a one-hit wonder though; in addition to designing album covers, he has painted murals and designed t-shirts for UNDFTD. He's also kind of famous in the art world (note exaggeration). I think what I like about his work is he doesn't have a signature move; every thing he does is unique. There's no walking by a record store and shrugging at the fact that you see another familiar-looking album cover and mutter that "no one has any new good ideas anymore". Not here; not with Rollins. He does a great job of mixing mediums to attract your attention and when you notice the fusion of components that make up the overall image, you're staring. So here, in no particular order, are three that caught my attention:

Blackalicious - Nia

Marcelo D2 - A Arte do Barulho (The Art of Noise)

And one of my all time favourite albums... Black Star - Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star
