Music Monday: Academy Awards Edition
Last night were the Academy Awards and I thought as a tribute to the great music behind the movies, this morning's Music Monday is dedicated to a few of my favourite winners or nominees for Best Original Song over the past 10 years. This is a totally subjective list, so if we disagree, that's cool.
"O Saya" - A. R. Rahman and Maya Arulpragasam, from Slumdog Millionaire
"Lose Yourself" - Eminem, from 8 Mile
"Almost There" - Music and Lyrics by Randy Newman, from Princess & the Frog
And two that somehow didn't get nominated...
"Cell Block Tango" - cast of Chicago, from Chicago
"And I Am Telling You, I'm Not Going" - Jennifer Hudson, from Dreamgirls

All awesome choices, but the reason the last two weren't nominated is because they weren't written specifically for the movies - each one already existed before their movie versions in musicals, deeming them ineligible. Often with movie musicals, composers will compose a new song to be eligible for the category; Chicago was nominated for a cool song called I Move On, for instance. :)
ReplyDeletenicely done with all the music knowledge! and ya, I definitely knew that the Dreamgirls song was a remake, so I should have clued in at the "original song" part - fail!
ReplyDeletethanks for the info though and I'm glad you liked the tunes
