Graffiti x Green Movement
I'm sure this is what environmental activists want... Korean designers have created a re-usable spray can, the Colour Dial Spray, which allows the tagger to load up to four colour cartridges and features two dials to control hue and brightness and allow the artist to be in full control of their oeuvre. The designers were inspired to create a green spray can after discovering that only 71% of the 180,000 tonnes of can produced every year in South Korea are recycled (which all things considered, isn't a bad recycling rate). I don't know the science behind aerosol cans or spray paint toxins but any successful attempt to offset environmental degradation has to be at least a little bit positive.

Reflection Eternal - RE:Union Mixtape
A few days ago, the Cool Kids offered us a free EP and now Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek drop a full length mixtape as a run-up to their upcoming album Revolutions Per Minute. This holiday season hip-hop fans, are getting loads of gifts and I'm not one to complain.
If you've never heard of Reflection Eternal (which is the name that Kweli and Tek released their first album under), this is a great introduction. Almost all the songs are produced by Hi-Tek and the mixtape features a collection of old, new and unreleased tracks including the new single "Just Begun" featuring Jay Electronica, Mos Def and a killer verse from J. Cole. Honestly, the mixtape is worth downloading just for this track alone.
I saw Talib at a free concert with my school last year and the guy is a beast. His lyrics are second to none and has no problem speaking his mind. Plus when he's offering this stuff for free, it's hard to say no. Enjoy the mixtape here.
Good Morning: At The End of Yonge Street
I found this video over on 1LoveTO. It's a 14 hour walk from Yonge St. & Wellington St. in Aurora south to the lake all captured by pictures. The pictures were then compiled into a stop-motion short film thanks to some handywork by the two tireless photographers. The point closest to my school and where I grew up was one of the shots at the 0:43 mark. Watch carefully; you're sure to recognize something.

Brand Blast: Pendleton
Although Pendleton may not be the most exciting brand in streetwear (hope you enjoyed that slideshow) they are becoming an increasingly substantial partner with popular streetwear companies. Since September (we're talking 4 months here), Pendleton has collaborated with at least 3 major brands (Trainspotter, Junta Watanabe and Hurley) and a world-famous clothing store and webstore Opening Ceremony.
Trainspotter teamed up with Pendleton's wool division to produce an outfit that features a hat and what is essentially a designer rain coat.

The Cool Kids - "Tires" (Video)
If you're not familiar with the Cool Kids, a hip-hop duo from the midwest, then it's time to familiarize yourself. As a holiday gift to all of you, complete strangers, the Cool Kids decided to drop an absolutely free 4-song EP as a lead up to their eventual debut album When Fish Ride Bicycles. The EP entitled Christmas features production from Don Cannon, Cool Kids' own Chuck Inglish and First Team All State and a guest appearance from Boldy James. If you're not generally a hip-hop fan don't worry, the Cool Kids' style is anything but ordinary and all in honesty, I wasn't a huge fan of theirs at the beginning like I am with other acts but they've grown on me. Anyways, as a belated present, download Christmas here
Just because we love you, here is a video for their track "Tires". Not an exciting video by any means but it's kind of cool to watch artists perform in the studio. It definitely makes me appreciate how performers have to memorize tons of lyrics and need to recall them at any moment. It's surely a craft.

New Blog; Deserved Thanks.
As some of you probably know, I have a new website, kevin rogers is listening, that I have been primarily updating with musings, meaning that I may not have a lot of time to contribute to J And J.
Not that I really have to, anyway: Jonny and Josh have this shit on lock-down. They have been consistently updating every single day, crafting a mish-mash of cultural keystones that gives all of its audience a conversation topic on the real. They're great dudes and I wish them all the best. I'll try to get in a few posts here and there, but, really, this has been J and J's show, and it will continue to be so.
Catch y'all on the flip,

NBA on Christmas Day
Christmas Day this year, which for most of my friends conisted of spending time with family and hopefully unwrapping some cool gifts, was an absolute sports day for me. I sat in front of the TV for almost 12 hours straight and watched 4 NBA games in their entirety. On top of that, I watched as much of the Titans-Chargers football game I could manage until I had had enough of the Titans getting man-handled. Although most of the basketball games were supposed to have been tight matchups resulting in great games, they all turned out to be a complete bore except for the Portland-Denver game - ya, Boston-Orlando, I'm talking about you.
And since I know you were wondering, my choice for Christmas Day MVP goes to Rajon Rondo who was 2 assists shy of a triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists along with 2 steals. The only knock on Rondo was his eight turnovers - which is thoroughly unacceptable. Lucky for him, the Magic played extremely poorly, but he turned on the heat and was the only reason the C's escaped Florida with a win. I've also gotto send props to Brandon Roy, who performed more than admirably by contributing a whopping 41 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in the Trail Blazers win; not bad for a guy who was a game-time decision with a shoulder injury. The LVP of the day is a shared award this year. The first recipient is the Denver Nuggets' defence, who slept on Portland's Steve Blake in the fourth quarter, only to watch the sharp shooter torch them for four 3-pointers in the final 12 minutes. They proudly share this award with an immature Lakers' crowd that threw foam fingers onto the court after some frustrating calls that just didn't go L.A.'s way.
So that was the NBA on Christmas Day - a wholly uneventful day and a slightly more eventful evening. But an NBA Christmas Day post would be incomplete without a sneaker display. Thanks to the good people over at SneakerNews and ESPN, I present to you the first collection of "Shoe Drop: the NBA Christmas Day Edition". Even though I'm really feeling Dwyane Wade's Air Jordans, props goes out to Rondo for changing his shoes at halftime. Check some more kicks after the jump.
P.s. I am so happy that L.A. lost to Cleveland at home. Merry Christmas Kobe.
Jean-Paul Gaultier x Levi's
French designer Jaun-Paul Gaultier, typically known for creating scents, has teamed up with Levi's to create a new denim collection featuring dark fades with red and white accents. L'Officiel Homme, a French magazine published by Milan Vukmirovic, co-founder of the French fashion boutique Collette, provides the first set of pictures from the collection. Although the pieces look like they were made from the same spool of material, the dark raw denim makes the collection seem distinctly Levi's, while at the same time provides for a different take on the usual jean jacket.
Personally, I'm happy that denim jackets are coming back hard (check out the jacket in BBC's Spring collection) and I may have to snag one when the weather gets a bit warmer.

BBC/Ice Cream Spring 2010 Lookbook
Pharrell's clothing line Billionaire Boys Club/Ice Cream unveiled its Spring 2010 collection today and I must say, I'm fairly impressed. Besides some basic graphic tees, I haven't liked much BBC-wise lately but this new set is hot! By combining twists on classic patterns, bold colours and the perfect set of shoes, BBC really nailed this one. Below are only a selection of the shots in the collection but for the sake of space (and tolerability) I didn't want to include the whole shoot. But just in case you want more, the link is available at the bottom of this post.
Drake x Weezy x Kobe Photoshoot for VIBE Magazine
Like we reported in an earlier post, Drake was going to be featured on the cover of the December '09 re-launch of VIBE Magazine. Well it seems that the305 has unveiled some images from the photoshoots. Although this isn't an excuse to avoid buying the magazine, the shots are so bad-ass I couldn't resist sharing them with you. If a photshoot of Drake, Weezy and Kobe wasn't dope, we'd have a serious problem - hopefully the kind of problem that Bryant and the Lakers will have hosting LBJ and the Cavs tomorrow. Anyways, enjoy.

Wow, it's the 24th already?
We'd like to wish those who celebrate a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays to everyone! Hopefully you're taking advantage of a much needed break from school and/or work and spending time with family and friends. Personally, I plan on planting my butt in front of the couch tomorrow and watching 2 NBA games before my Tennessee Titans kick off for an evening tilt against the San Diego Chargers (NFL). Whatever you're doing over the next few days, stay safe and have fun!
P.s. A big thanks to Flickr user Ellesche, who posted a picture of this house in Pickering I drove by yesterday. Ok, in all honesty, I parked and got out because I had to look at it and damn, it was impressive but their December electricity bill must be ludicrous. Happy Holidays!!!

Keys N Krates
Self-proclaimed "re-inventers of the remix" Keys N Krates is a trio from Toronto consisting of DJ Jr Flo, Matisse on the keys and Tune the drummer. The concept of their band is simple but not easy to execute: remix tracks live. For a DJ alone, this is hard enough but throw in real instruments and the level of difficulty has exponentially multiplied. Needless to say, these guys have no problem with a challenge.
Keys N Krates opened for Kid Cudi at the Sound Academy earlier this month, they have travelled all across North America and continue to delight audiences with their energetic performances and solid mix of electronic and instrumental grooves. Heads up to the Ottawans reading this, Keys N Krates are playing at Ritual on New Years' Eve so if you're looking for somewhere to jam, head over! They also have a few more dates in Montreal and Quebec City in the new year before heading off to Whistler to play at the Olympics. We know they'll have the snow bunnies going nuts and the club bumping.
If you can't make it to any of the shows, hopefully Chicago's @superfun video can tide you over. @superfun caught up with them after a gig in the Windy City and had a few questions about what it is exactly they do.

Kanye West for A Bathing Ape
Yeezy is the model for BAPE's Spring 2010 collection and I have to admit, most of this stuff is nice. The only piece I would refuse to wear without even thinking twice is the camo jacket. By no means am I usually a fan of BAPE clothing but recently they've dropped some nice lines and products including the Kid Cudi tee. In particular, I'm really feeling the pants in these shots. Although they look like they're too big, they aren't baggy. I also really like the light blue shirt in the 3rd picture and the pattern on the belt in the 6th picture. All in all, this is a solid set of stuff for the Spring (alliteration not intended).
Nike "City Attack"
I have no idea where these came from, or when or where they're available but I'm really feeling the pair on the right. I'm generally not a fan of black shoes but these ones definitely caught my eye. The detailing on the upper portion of the back is colourful enough that it pops but isn't obnoxious and the rough material on the toe is a nice contrast to the leather.

No, this didn't make the Gift Guide for this year. This baby comes in at over 5 poundsm is made out of 22 carat gold and features 78 diamonds. Price? $490,000 Even Pharrell called this excessive and he's known to cop the newest and most expensive stuff on the market.

Jeremy Scott for adidas Orginal by Original
Fashion designer Jeremy Scott has teamed up with adidas to create a third line of Originals by Originals apparel for the Spring/Summer 2010 season. ObyO has also previously partnered with Kazuki, Alyasha, and David Beckham and J. Bond to create diverse sets that range from "Wild Style" to "High-Tech Fashion" to "Originality American-style". Personally I have always been a fan of adidas apparel; I think they manage to do a great job of mixing athelticism with fashion (their track jackets are second-to-none).
While this collection definitely falls into "Wild Style", there are some pieces that are street-worthy. The collection drops worldwide March 15th, 2010 in Originals stores (Torontonians, that means 389 Queen St. West for you). Check out some more shots after the jump.
Oh Cudder...
Kid Cudi, who was until recently the opening act on Lady Gaga's Monster tour, has decided to bow out to finish his second album Cudder (due out in 2010) and pursue acting opportunities (roll my eyes...). This comes a week after punching a fan in the face. Yup. At a show in Vancouver, a fan threw a wallet at Kid Cudi and although it missed him, Cudi, instead of being mature and continuing his performance, started talking smack to the fan. He then jumped in the crowd and threw a nice right hook. Problem is, he hit the wrong fan! Oy... Thankfully for us, someone caught it on camera. Watch the video after the jump.

Banksy
To start off the graffiti/street art profiles that I promised a little while ago, we have famed English stencil street artist Banksy. He has created some new "pieces" that have appeared in Regent's Canal, London, England. The works come after the recent COP15 environmental conference in Copenhagen and are a clear indication that he, along with most people it seems, is dissatisfied with the results.
The one thing you must know about him though is that you don't know him. No one does. The guy is a complete mystery; his identity is a secret. Many have investigated and guessed, but all have failed. He doesn't even have an agent; he has a "handling service" that acts as his seller for new works (those that can actually be sold and aren't on walls). The craziest part is how succesful this guy is! In June he showcased an exhibition containing over 100 pieces of art at Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery in Bristol, England and on the first weekend alone, 8,500 people came to see it. Over the 12 weeks of the exhibition, 350,000 visitors came. Not bad for a ghost.
He is one of the most influential and famous modern artists and his mysteriousness has only increased his reputation. Check out the jump for more pics.

NBA Top 10: Friday
Although I watch the Top 10 NBA plays daily, I wouldn't post this unless it were special. Last night, I had the privilege (yes, privilege) of watching the Toronto Raptors man-handle the New Jersey Nets 118-95. Even though we still won by 23 points, the score is misleading; we played our third-stringers for much of the 4th quarter and the Nets managed to close what was once a 40-point lead. The whole game was a highlight reel. By the 12th alley-oop, the allure was gone and the half-empty ACC let out a feeble cheer. The Top 10 from last night features not one, not two, but three plays from last night's Raptors game, two of which feature my man Demar Derozan, and thus I am posting this for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy ladies and gents.
Killa Kombo - Askew x P. Money
Two of New Zealand's finest have teamed up to create a short video that takes gives a glimpse into the process of creating graffiti murals. Askew is the graffiti artist and P. Money produced the beats for the vid. The vision that Askew has is amazing; to have a blank wall and create layers upon layers of images with spray paint is pure art.

Recap of 1LoveTO's Pop-up shop
Wednesday night Josh and I had the opportunity to go and meet Bryan Brock and Tyrone Edwards, the founders of 1LoveTO, in some swanky loft above Nyood on Queen Street West. First and foremost, they were really nice guys. Although Tyrone was attending to other guests, Bryan took the time to talk to us for a few minutes and we got to hear how far they've come and what their future plans are. Bryan is originally a graphic designer and one of his older projects was designing the DVD covers for Degrassi, so he was able to hook up with Drake and they've kept in touch ever since. In fact, they co-hosted his 23rd birthday party and needless to say, the event featured the whole OVO crew and some of Toronto's finest. They have Melanie Fiona on their Blackberrys and Tyrone just recently hosted Kid Cudi's concert at the Sound Academy.
But on to some deeper stuff, the story behind 1LoveTO is worth mentioning. Bryan explained their whole existence in two sentences: They designed their t-shirts for Caribana a few years back, everybody loved them and wanted one. They decided to start a blog and here we are. Ok, I'm not sure it was as simple as that, but pretty close. Essentially 1LoveTO received a hugely positive response right from the get-go and Bryan told me that for their pop-up shop, they had received around 200 t-shirt orders and have now sold 2500 in total.
And if that weren't enough, both Tyrone and Bryan are staff at the Remix Project, a creative arts outlet for youth - a project that Governor General Michaëlle Jean has even visited and endorsed. Tyrone is the Art of Business Program Leader and Bryan is the Creative Arts Program Leader. Although recently marred by financial troubles, the Remix Project was completely rejuvenated upon learning that Paul Gross, a Canadian actor and director, plans on donating the $25,000 he received along with his Governor General's award so that the Remix Project can move into its new location. I'm sure Mrs. Jean is smiling.
It's clear these guys are legit. It was great meeting them and learning what their plans are, and how they came to be who and where they are today. It is my sincerest hope that someday we will be able to work with these guys in any sort of fashion. Until then, the best I can do is wear my shirt proudly.
Sadly, I took no photos of the event besides the one above, but I wanted to show you the venue so all the pictures below are stolen directly from 1LoveTO.

Rihanna - Hard (Feat. Young Jeezy)
On the topic of fascism, Rihanna whips a few good men into shape in her new video. All together it's a decent video except for the shameless Poker Stars plug and Jeezy's lack of on-screen presence. At one point, I was worried he was stuck on that crate but then he stoof up; relief; and then he sat back down.

An interesting H1N1 ad
A friend and classmate of mine, Adrian, posted this picture on his Twitter and I felt it was bizarre enough for a re-post. His caption was "Ontario Health has fascist style propaganda ads for h1n1 shot around city" and seem fitting. This looks like it was commissioned from an old 1930s workbook with the fist clenching and the font/colour combos. I think my favourite part of this though is a toss up between the middle guy's mullet and the "Don't miss hockey" warning. What do you guys think, effective advertising or a misguided message?
P.s. Adrian just informed me that the mullet man is in fact a woman. I disagree but if he is right, she is a tank and her body must be carrying enough male hormones to combine with her female hormones to confuse the disease and remain uninfected.

Looking for that holiday flick?
I noticed Jonny posted a trailer for Alice in Wonderland, and this movie follows the same creepy/trippy/awesome formula. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is the story of a magic theatre group who gives its audience the choice of light and joy, or darkness and gloom. Heath Ledger passed away during production, so the director casted Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law to play Ledger's character through the remainder of the movie. Canadian Christopher Plummer also stars in this fantasy flick, which is directed by Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas). Imaginarium is set for release on December 25th. Check out the trailer below.
A New Twist On A Classic
Although I have no idea who Mister Mort is, I know he has a sense of humour. He recently hooked up with A Continuous Lean to design five New Era caps that put a great spin on classic symbols. Since I hate the Dodgers, despite the fact that my dad is from Los Angeles, I immediately became Mister Mort's new best friend when I saw the bLAh cap. I can only imagine my smugness, and the beating I'd receive, for rocking this cap on Crenshaw Blvd. In the meantime, I'll just sit here and laugh...and also be depressed considering the Blue Jays will wallow in mediocrity for at least the next three seasons.

The Only Advertisement That Defines This Decade
What are the haps, guys?
I was checking out a list at Adweek that's celebrating the decade in advertisements, most of them didn't interest or entertain me a significant amount, but this was most certainly the best of the bunch, I couldn't stop laughing for at least ten minutes:
Not only is it a hilarious piece (sad funny is always more funny than funny, always), but it's a type of humour that definitely couldn't exist even a decade ago. Congratulations, Skittles, this ad is better than your candy.

Gift Guide Item #8: Hand Blown Modern Barware Set
A friend of mine recently bought a very nice watch made out of melted spoons (I hope this is the right link) from Etsy so I decided to take a look at the site. Etsy is a sort of community website where designers can sell their creations to the public and Etsy receives a very small portion of all sales. While browsing, I came across this this set of 8 hand-made shot glasses. Each individual shot glass has a slightly different ridged base, making the set look very real and hand-made as opposed to the usual monotony of shot glasses. Sadly, the set doesn't come with the wood base but nonetheless, this is a gift that any frequent party host would love to receive. Available through Etsy here for $29 USD.

1LoveTO Pop-up shop
Sorry for the late notice guys, but I guess better than never. One of my favourite sites 1LoveTO is setting up a one-day pop-up shop tomorrow at Nyood where they will be selling their T-shirts. Nyood is located at 1096 Queen St. West (Queen/Dovercourt) and will be open from 3-10pm. I've been looknig to get a shirt for some time now so I will definitely be heading over at some point in the evening to pick mine up. They're selling them for $20 and are available in either white or black with (I believe) red, white or blue hearts. These shirts are popular and will go quickly; grab one while you can. Check out the event here and some pictures I found below.
Victim Short Duffle Coat
I'm feeling this jacket over at Victim for a simple reason: because it's short, it won't make me seem any shorter than I am. I'm about 5'8" (on a good day) and jackets that hang down to my thighs make me look like I have stumpy legs - something I don't need. Available in 3 colours, these jackets look sturdy enough to stand up against our current weather (it has a hood) and I really like the detailed ribbing around the shoulders and the two front pockets. Always wear this type of jacket with the collar button undone (it makes you seem a less uptight) and for an even more relaxed look, leave the top toggle unhooked.

Gucci Eyeweb Goggles
Keeping with our theme of designers and sports, Gucci has released two pairs of goggles to keep your eyes protected on the slopes. They come with either a white or black trim around the actual lenses and are held in place by the now-customary green and red headband with Gucci written prominently in the middle. The goggles will be available starting this month at Gucci stores worldwide and will retail for $195US, which, all things considered, isn't even a bad price.

Louis Vuitton Casino Trunk
Maybe I don't understand the appeal, seeing as I'm not a fan of - nor have the money for - the ultra luxurious, but a Louis Vuitton Casino Trunk seems excessive to me. Obviously some toys are hard to resist but let's think about this one: If you're in charge of lugging enough equipment to a friend's house that you need a trunk, isn't it time to proclaim yourself as the new host? However, there is one upside: the trunk comes with all the necessary hardware to play a variety of games, thus ensuring you'll have the opportunity to lose money to your buddies in a multitude of games you're probably not good at. But then again, if you can afford this, you're probably not worried about the money.

TIME Magazine's Top 10 T-shirt Worthy Slogans
Good on TIME for going balls out on this one (2 of the top 10 were world leaders) considering their iconic status and magnitude. Some are definitely better than others though. Here are my 5 favourite with the descriptions from the website right under them. Check out the rest of the list here and TIME's master list of everything to do with 2009 here. I think #9 is my favourite; his hubris is nauseating.
1. Kanye West: "Imma Let You Finish"
Part of rapper Kanye West's bizarre opening line upon interrupting country singer Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards, as she gave her acceptance speech for Best Female Video. He then asserted, "Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time."
2. Tiger Woods: "Kobe Special"
Hours after what many speculate was a domestic dispute with his wife, golfer Tiger Woods reportedly told a friend that he had to buy one of these ("A house on a finger") at Zales. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers gave his wife a $4 million 8-carat diamond ring after being accused of rape in 2003.
3. Silvio Berlusconi: "I'm No Saint"
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's first public remarks after the release of audio recordings said to be from a night he spent with a prostitute.
7. Kate Moss: "Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny Feels"
One of Kate Moss's personal credos, which was revealed after the supermodel was asked by an interviewer if she had any mottos. Critics said the comment could contribute to eating disorders among Moss's young fans.
9. Lloyd Blankfein: "Doing God's work"
