Excerpts of Hope

31 years ago yesterday, Harvey Milk was assassinated by a former colleague. Luckily for the billions of people of all sexual orientations around the world, his messages and ideas live on. Whether you are straight, gay or otherwise, his words are powerful and stand for equality. He was a pioneer for the gay movement and equality in general and will continue to be remembered as such.

Sadly, this was the only video of his "Hope Speech" I could find, so please ignore the cheesy triumphant march music in the background.

A bold statement

Freshjive, an L.A.-based clothing company, is set to release a powerful T-shirt depicting Barack Obama's popular "Hope" picture as though it's being washed off the page. The tee is called "Hope is Fading Fast" and I think it represents what a lot of people are thinking: What has Obama actually done for the U.S. (and the world for that matter) since he was inaugurated back in January? While Obama has definitely made good head starts in bridging ties between the U.S. and other parts of the world (particularly in the Middle East), he has made very few substantive policy changes. Is this point-of-view partly a cause of the world having such high expectations for him? Without a doubt. But that doesn't take anything away from the point.

Check out the t-shirt below. And for an interesting view on current issues around the world, check out Freshjive's "The World's Got Problems" blog.
